For more than half a century, it has been widely published that the study abroad scholarship Pedro Albizu Campos received was awarded by the Freemasons of the Logia Aurora #7 of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Another version is that Jose de Diego heard Albizu speak at a conference and was so impressed that he awarded Albizu a study abroad scholarship. These two claims are factually incorrect. There is a connection between Albizu, the Logia Aurora # 7, and Jose de Diego, and this is explained in Albizu’s scholarship correspondence spanning from March 1912 until August of 1912. Durante más de medio siglo, se ha publicado ampliamente que la beca de estudios en el extranjero que recibió Pedro Albizu Campos fue otorgada por los masones de la Logia Aurora #7 de Ponce, Puerto Rico. Otra versión es que José de Diego escuchó a Albizu hablar en una conferencia y quedó tan impresionado que le otorgó a Albizu una beca para estudiar en el extranjero. Estas dos afirmaciones son objetivamente incorrectas. Honorables señores:

 Al atreverme a molestar el más alto poder local, he sido impulsado por el ansia de saber que irresistible en mí, un deseo dominante de aprender, investigar y analizar para así poder ser un hombre útil no sólo para mí si no también para mi patria.

Hasta ahora a fuerzas de indescriptibles privaciones y sufrir miserias he podido ir gradualmente ascendiendo hasta ahora que soy alumno del cuarto año. Sin embargo todavía creo no saber nada y aunque con el deseo de saber me parece que todas mis aspiraciones morirán si vosotros, dignos representantes de mi querido pueblo, no prestáis la benévola ayuda a este humilde joven que quiere levantarse.

Según he sabido vosotros podéis conceder becas para facilitar que los alumnos de las escuelas de Ponce puedan terminar sus estudios en los Estados Unidos después de haber terminado su curso de cuatro años en la Alta Escuela.

Al saber esto una esperanza que vosotros espero no borréis, renació en mí. Apelo Pues a vuestro altruismo y también a la justicia. Os suplico que me consideréis como aspirante a una de esas becas para facilitarme el estudio de la carrera de ingeniero agrónomo.

Ciertos datos escolares me parecen serán oportunos. Como alumno de octavo grado obtuve la calificación más alta en Puerto Rico, Por lo cual la respetable Logia Aurora No. 7 me hizo el honor de premiar mis humildes esfuerzos con una hermosa enciclopedia y un diploma de honor en el cual se tomó en cuenta mi conducta intachable y mi regular asistencia. Después como alumno de High School podéis leer la certificación aquí incluida, ella representa la nota oficial de la facultad de nuestra Alta Escuela firmada por nuestro principal Mr. E. N. Gerrish.

When it occurred to me to be bold enough to bother the highest local authority, I was driven by a yearning for knowledge that is irresistible within me, an overpowering desire to learn, research and analyze so that, in that way, I can become a useful man not only for myself, but also for my homeland.

So far, through indescribable hardships and suffering miseries, I have been able to gradually advance until today, when I am a fourth-year student. However, I believe that I still know nothing and, while I have the desire to know, I am convinced that all my aspirations will perish if you, worthy representatives of my dear people, do not render your benevolent assistance to this humble young man who wants to get on his feet.

I have learned that you are able to grant scholarships to help students from Ponce schools complete their studies in the United States once they have completed their four-year program at High School.

Upon learning about this, a glimmer of hope arose within me, which I hope you do not suppress. I, therefore, appeal to your altruism and also to justice. I beg that you consider me as an applicant for one of those scholarships to facilitate my study of the agricultural engineering program.

I believe that it would be fitting to provide certain scholastic information. As an eighth-year student I obtained the highest grade in Puerto Rico, which is why the Respectable Logia Aurora No. 7 honored me by rewarding my humble efforts with a beautiful encyclopedia and an honorary diploma that took into account my impeccable conduct and my regular attendance. Additionally, you can read the certificate as a High School student attached hereto, which states the official grade by the Faculty of our High School signed by our principal, Mr. E. N. Gerrish.
